Destiny: sometimes referred to as fate.
A person’s destiny is everything that happens to them during their life, including what will happen in the future, especially when it is considered to be controlled by someone or something else.
Destiny comes to us with multiple layers of meaning, alongside many connections that interweave with people, and can transcend through time. Sometimes it can be considered as something good and enlightening, but destiny can also be events that are not so pleasant.
Destiny can connect us to extraordinary discoveries that may just happen from something as simple as an apple falling from a tree. It is not a new concept. The realisation of destiny has happened to many of us at different times in our lives and been documented throughout time.
The fate spinners, the Greek Morai, the Roman Parcae and the Norse Norns, all personifications of destiny or fate. All spinning their gold threads, directing humanity through life and death.
The Anglo-Saxons grasped what fate/destiny was with their word ‘wyrd.’ According to the English Oxford dictionary it means; ‘the principal, power, or agency by which events are predetermined; fate, destiny.’
In the great Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, he himself, states to Hrothgar after his fight with the monster Grendel, ‘Fate always goes as it must.’
Beowulf appreciates this is his destiny.
Destiny in Love
Why did Horatio Nelson fall in love with Emma Hamilton to go against all the ‘norms’ in society to be with each other until his death?

Would Issac Newton have ‘discovered’ gravity if the apple had not fallen before him? He went on to produce his laws of motion and universal gravitation.
Destiny in Story-telling
If J R R Tolkein had not had the life experiences that destiny had given him would the Lord of The Rings mean as much? He changed courses whilst studying at Oxford University to learn more about languages. And later he was one of the few who survived the First World War.
Was it all meant to happen as it did…fated, destined? It led to an amazing story told in a series of books.
What does it mean to us?
Today, in our busy lives we can still sense our destiny, knowing it is something to be searched for. However, we don’t always recognise what it is…until we stop, think and look back.
When we notice the paths we have walked, seeing their meaning, connections and coincidences, destiny floats toward us in different guises and sometimes when you least expect it. I am now more aware of this and must admit I was ignorant of it before.
Destiny is the force which some people believe controls the things that happen to you in your life and who you will share those experiences with.
It can be revealed to you by a simple look, or a gentle touch. It can start with a thought, a notion to search for truths and then it can lead to so much more…
